Wholesome Baby Food and Mothers' Milk: The Healthiest Headstart You Can Give your Newborn
Wholesome baby food and mother’s milk are the best ways to give your infant a healthy start. Every good parent wants their baby to be healthy and happy. To have a happy healthy baby it is important to prepare for delivering that bundle of joy long before conception. Treat your body like a temple. Eat right and get plenty of exercise. Prepare a healthy body to carry that precious new life.Be sure to get quality prenatal care and to continue with a good health regimen. Once that new life has emerged from its cozy womb he will continue to grow and to thrive if given the right nourishment. To be healthy and happy a baby needs nourishment in many forms. If you leave an infant in a crib and give him only food he will fail to thrive. Infants need love, touch, interaction and security. He needs affection and stimulation. He needs to feel safe to thrive. Just startle a sleeping baby and see how loud he will cry! (No, don’t do that! It would be mean!) Babies also need to be protected from toxins that will hinder their development or cause aberrant behavior. These toxins may appear in baby formula, the air, clothing and toys. From birth the most important wholesome baby food your infant can have for good health and a strong immune system is mother's milk.
Breast Milk
contains many nutrients not found in formula or cow’s milk that are essential for a healthy immune system. Mother’s milk is all that is needed by your newborn for the first six months. When introducing “solid food” in the way of pureed baby food you have a few options.
You can purchase
commercially made baby food
(not necessarily wholesome baby food) which is often loaded with water and chemically altered starches.
You can buy prepared organic baby food. But even some of these have been shown to be high in sugar and sodium.
You can easily and more cheaply make
wholesome baby food.
yourself. This link has great recipes for your little ones!Fruit Juices Fruit juices can be introduced at about six months. Juices for infants should always be diluted. And since babies often start teething at six months it’s never a good idea to let them go to sleep with a juice bottle unless you want a baby with tooth decay. The sugars in juice will eat away at your baby’s new tooth buds. The Wholesome Baby Food site gives good advice about what to introduce to your baby and at what stage. It also provides advice on how to handle constipation that often occurs when a baby is first introduced to solids. When I gave birth to Lori she was too weak to get my milk. As a Downs child she had very poor suckling action. I was not aware of the support group
Le Leche League
that would have provided her with milk or would have shown me how to pump my milk. I did not know at that time how important mother’s milk is. Her first pediatrician was of no help. In fact, he was so poorly informed he suggested we put her in an institution! Whether you are bottle feeding your little one with mother’s milk or formula the Environmental Working Group has
safety guidelines
for heating the bottle. Choosing Baby Formula Your pediatrician will likely counsel you on what formula to use. Powdered formula will be safest to use because liquid formula may be in cans lined with

Many infants have trouble digesting formula. Lori was no exception. At some point she developed colic so severe that her little body stiffened from the pain. Who knew seven pounds of baby could scream so loudly! This went on non-stop for days. The meds the pediatrician gave were of little help and I did not want to keep medicating her…Along came a friend with a suggestion for natural relief. I added plain yogurt to her formula, starting with a teaspoon in each bottle. I gradually increased the yogurt to one ounce per bottle of formula. From the first teaspoon of yogurt I could see improvement. No more colic---until one day I found I had no yogurt. Colic returned within 24 hours. I quickly purchased yogurt again and made sure it was ALWAYS on hand after that fiasco! Yogurt is still one of Lori’s favorite snack!
