What Are The Best Oils to Use For a Healthy Heart, Thyroid and Immune System?

No doubt you have read that transfat is unhealthy. It is! Hydrogenated fats are not healthy. Artery clogging fats are not healthy.

There are saturated fats, mono-unsaturated fats, unsaturated fats, poly-unsaturated fats. It’s so confusing!

Saturated fats seemed to get lumped into the same category with transfats.

I was going to say that not all saturated fats are created equal but Dr. Bruce Fife beat me to the punch in an article published in 2003. The article explains how coconut oil and palm oil came to be looked upon as “bad guys” instead of the healthy oils they really are. Read about healthy oils here. Again, I will leave the science to the experts but after reading about so many of the benefits of coconut oil, I went in search of some. I was on a very important quest. I wanted to be healthy!

Finding coconut oil was no easy task five years ago. My search came up empty. I had to buy it on line because it was nowhere to be found locally.

I guess Dr. Fife and other experts in the field such as Dr. Mary Enig and Raymond Peat have had some success getting the word out about the health benefits of coconut oil. My local health food store, Rutabaga's Etc., was the first I found to carry organic coconut oil and now my favorite Publix supermarket carries it. I'm not thrilled with the brand but it beats nothing. I love the convenience!

Though coconut oil is mostly saturated fat, it is actually low fat. Really! It is quickly metabolized and gives a boost of energy. It promotes a healthy thyroid. It helps with weight loss. It reduces hunger. Coconut oil aids in controlling blood sugar.

Coconut oil has properties that make it antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial. It can help treat pancreatitis. It promotes healthy cholesterol ratios by increasing good cholesterol (HDL), good for the heart.

Used in conjunction with the proper diet it can help control Candida (a fungus among us).

Coconut oil reduces the risk of cancer and atherosclerosis. Dr. Fife lists a much longer list of benefits on the Coconut Research website. Check it out. It's pretty impressive!

I have dumped all oils in our house except for organic coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and organic butter.

We have no margarine or transfats in our house!

Coconut oil has a high smoke point which makes it excellent for sautéing and frying. In recipes that call for butter I substitute half the butter with coconut oil. (I like the taste of organic butter.)

I use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I apply it to rashes. I recently used it to clear a patch of itchy eczema on my face by applying a dab three times a day. It took less than three days to get of the eczema. It takes the itch out of mosquito bites!

We give it to our Lab-mix canine. Cody has chronic skin problems. I rub it onto his hot spots and it reduces his scratching considerably.

Coconut oil does not go rancid quickly. It has an extremely long shelf life though it doesn’t last long in my house before being consumed!

Coconut oil has a melting point of 76F degrees. It will be in solid form in the store since most stores keep the thermostats hovering around 68F degrees to prevent spoilage. It becomes a liquid about 76F.

Did I mention that it promotes a healthy thyroid? Sure I did. I’m living proof. My energy is high, my weight is down and that pesky goiter that used to interfere with my swallowing—GONE. I no longer take a prescription synthetic thyroid medicine.

No more twice-a-year trips to the pill pusher, no more meds!

Another healthy oil: extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). We always have it on hand.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola extra virgin olive oil is a monounsaturated fat and more stable than polyunsaturates. Olive oil has vitamin E and A as well as other nutrients for heart health.

Olive oil has essential fatty acids which, as the name would imply, are essential for good health. Olive oil assists in cancer protection. However, high heat will destroy most of the beneficial aspects of olive oil as heat will oxidize it. Use EVOO on salads and veggies. It is best used cold.

Olive oil does not have a long shelf life. It will go rancid after opening if left on the shelf too long. Refrigerate it if you don’t intend to use it up soon.

Keep in mind that most vegetable oils are derived from genetically modified plants. Go to Ingredients page for more about this.

Most plant and animal fats have long chain fatty acids that turn to fat in the body. Coconut oil is composed of healthier short and mostly medium chain fatty acids that burn as energy rather than turning into fat.

Don’t believe everything you see on television and in magazines. Read Dr. Fife’s article about how tropical oils like (imported) coconut and palm oils became known as “bad guys”.

According to his article the reasons were not based on science. There were purely profit motivated. Growers wanted to sell more of their domestic oils to manufactures instead of having them use the healthier imported oils.
