Artificial Sugars & Sweeteners: How Safe are They?
Artificial sugars and sweeteners are all the rage with dieters and used extensively by diabetic and others who need to watch their sugar intake. How safe are these artificial sugars? Let's see...
ASPARTAME The most popular, I believe, of all artificial sweeteners. Used in a whole bunch of sugar free foods including diet soda, sugar-free gums and snacks, for example. Our pals at the FDA say it is safe. So it must be safe, right? There are so many symptoms caused by this one product that it’s hard to know where to begin. Headaches, memory loss, blurred vision, chronic fatigue, seizures, weight gain are but a few of the 90+ symptoms reported by users of aspartame. The Food and Drug Administration denied approval of aspartame for eight years. Enter Arthur Hull Hayes, appointed by Pres. Ronald Reagan. He reversed the FDA decision and approved it. Hayes later took a job with the company that owned aspartame. That company was G. D Searle, later sold to Monsanto who subsequently sold the aspartame business to a group of investors. Judging from the huge profits made from selling aspartame it was a wise financial investment. If you wish to make a better investment (i. e. in your health) you would be wise to stay away from aspartame in the face of recent research. SPLENDA Splenda is an unnatural chemical derived from natural sugar. Put simply, Splenda, also known as sucralose is made by adding chlorine to sucrose. It is a chlorocarbon related to DDt. Chlorocarbons are carcinogenic (that spells cancer, Folks). They cause liver and kidney damage as well as reproductive damage. Coca Cola and Pepsi put sucralose in their flavored waters. Splenda has soared in popularity since being approved by the FDA. There was never any long term independent testing done. The long term effects of this chemical have yet to be determined. Use it at your own risk.
