How Does Stress Affect Your Immune System?

What are the causes of stress?

There are many causes but I will give an abbreviated list here:

  • Overwork

  • Not enough rest/quiet time

  • Poor eating habits and poor nutrition

  • Not enough fluids

    Now you may not be able to reduce your workload, especially in today’s economy, but you can reduce the affects this stress causes to your body. Proper nutrition and adequate rest are essential. Without them you are doomed to suffer as I did with a number of health issues.

    Those issues affected my life in every way. I felt as though I was trudging through deep sand with every step. My joints ached, my skin was tender to touch, and, if you can believe it, even my hair hurt.

    Now that’s pain!

    It was a chore to get out of bed every day—some days I just couldn’t do it!

    My digestive system was sluggish and I developed a big hole in my stomach from taking NSIADs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which pretty much precluded taking almost anything for pain after that!

    My goiter would not go away and neither would the extra pounds I had put on, no matter how much thyroid medication I took and no matter how little I ate. Exercise was a painful option that didn’t do the trick either.

    I won’t bore you with any more of the gory details but I knew I had to do something! Doctors didn’t help. They just kept prescribing more meds. I was sick of taking expensive tests and expensive drugs. To add more stress to my body and bank account, I had no medical insurance.

    I had to act and I had to act fast! I wanted to get my LIFE back!

    I researched and I read and I shopped for natural supplements pertaining to my specific needs to jumpstart my recovery. And I went on a quest to find the best sources of organic and natural foods.

    I discovered an amazing technique that helps to control, stress, pain and anxiety.

    I read labels! Ya gotta read labels! Know what you are putting in your body.

    Imagine my delight when I found a wonderful organic produce section at my favorite supermarket! I was only vaguely aware that it even existed! My husband groaned about the prices but I had to give them a try!

    Oh! The flavor! Who woulda thunk they tasted sooo much better than conventionally grown produce! Another plus is that they are filled with more healthy nutrients, phytonutrients (that’s good) and antioxidants than conventionally grown foods. According to researchers, sometimes up to 30% more!

    Phytonutrients are found in plant life. To give an example: alpha-carotenes. Everyone has heard that carrots are good for your eyes. It’s due, in part, to the alpha-carotenes that are in carrots. BTW, organic carrots are particularly tasty and are wonderful julienned into a salad or juiced. A real treat for the eyes.

    {An aside: (this is another wonderful benefit of our new-found lifestyle). I have been myopic all my life. I have worn glasses since age 11 to see any distance and was restricted to driving only while wearing eyeglasses or contacts.

    I no longer need corrective lenses to drive or to read! No restrictions on MY license any longer!}

    It was not long after changing our eating habits that I was symptom free, medicine free and (almost) stress free. I was back to my previous (if slightly hyperactive) good health! My sluggish digestive tract is now in high gear---um sorry. Is that a little TMI?

    We’ll get into how to fix the inadequate rest issue later with some tips and tricks!

    Not only am I symptom free-- no achy joints, no slogging through sand—my whole family has lost weight! My husband and I lost 40 and 35 pounds, respectively! Without really trying, I might add! My 5’2” frame went from a size 14P to 6P. Ray’s 40” waist dropped to 34”.

    The goiter that interfered with my swallowing---GONE!!

    Energy—you bet!

    Lori has lost 13 pounds, quite a significant amount of weight considering her 4’6” stature. And I honestly don’t remember the last time any of us had a common cold or illness of any kind that required medical attention. Talk about stress reduction!

    Is it possible that we are on to something here? The savings in medical expenses alone is astounding!
