What is Glycemic Index and is It Important For Good Health?

Glycemic Index (GI) is a way of determining the absorption rate of certain foods affecting blood glucose levels. High GI foods will tend to spike blood sugar levels causing higher insulin levels. Eventually higher insulin levels will lead to insulin resistance, weight gain and diabetes, among other problems.

Foods with lower GI are said to generally keep blood sugar at a more even level releasing energy in a steadier pattern throughout the day.

There are Glycemic Index guides freely available on line but keep in mind that the charts are simply an average. Actual GI values will vary depending on ripeness of food and how it is prepared.

It is no surprise to me that processed foods have higher GI values.

It should be no surprise to anyone perusing this website that raw unprocessed foods fall in the lower, ergo healthier values.

Eating healthy will keep your GI in line, your waistline slim and blood sugar healthier.

If you want to lose weight a little faster choose fruits and veggies with a lower GI. Jazzing them up with healthy herbs and spices will enhance food value and flavor.
